Northbourne Flats
Northbourne Flats National Design Competition – “re_framed”
V Arc recently submitted a proposal for the Northbourne Flats National Design Competition. The competition called for submissions for the redevelopment of the ACT’s Government’s Northbourne Flats, a public housing estate built in 1958.
With the existing buildings currently under review for heritage listing, “re_framed” was born from the idea of creating a sustainable community through re-framing the old and embracing the new; creating a development that respects the environment and community, meets community needs & provides first class amenity for both social housing tenants and private residents alike.
Linking across both the Braddon and Turner sites, the Northbourne Flats frame one of the key transit routes into Canberra, providing an opportunity to create an iconic gateway and entrance into the city.
The redevelopment of the Northbourne flats provides the perfect opportunity to invigorate public housing and increase density, setting the benchmark for residential urban renewal in Canberra.
