Ashwood House

This new house uses some innovative sustainable building techniques to create an aesthetic that challenges the norm of how a ‘green’ building can look. North facing highlight windows allow winter sun to penetrate deeply into the interior spaces and passively heat the internal water tanks that act as thermal mass in the otherwise lightweight building.

In the living area, deep red stained lapped plywood panels create a warmth that contrasts with the naturally finished, lighter dining area panels with their backlit edges that offer a linear glow at night. The stainless steel corrugated profile feature tank separates the dining and living zones along with three more charcoal Colorbond internal tanks creating stunning forms within the dynamic spaces. The long arch of the curved circulation route through the plan terminates and focuses the viewer on the trunk of the retained mature oak tree to the south of the house.A chainmesh fence protecting the house from a park that was once used as a hockey field, now filters the west profile of the home that references the underlying form of the Sydney Opera House – a playful acknowledgement of the owners’ all-time favourite building.
