Byron Bay - Former Butter Factory complete

13 January 2010

It’s been a long time coming but well worth the wait! The former Butter Factory site at Byron Bay is complete.

Nearly 5 years in the making, this once tired and dilapidated historic landmark has been rejuvenated into 10 amazing warehouse apartments each with their own individual character. Each built over 3 levels they provide bright, airy volumes that will never be reproduced. The design intent was to provide sophisticated modern living within a historic canvas. By inserting the entry & living areas on the first floor the layout provides for easy access to all levels separating public from private living areas. The elevated living also allows access to the common spaces meaning occupants have more chance to socialise and mingle within the landscaped areas.

A new building housing 4 more apartments and ground floor retail now address Jonson St. This timber clad 3 level building provides the gateway into the site as well as continuing the retail street frontage now so apparent along Jonson St. The souring roof forms are reminiscent of the industrial sawtooth roofs and the time screen are a historical reference to the former site generator station once located at the front of the site.
